Why sports arbitration?

Arbitration is part of the dispute resolution mechanisms that exist in sport and has established itself as the preferred instance for sports organizations, athletes and other actors in the sports ecosystem, having as the most used institution, without being the only one, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

Therefore, training to understand sports arbitration will provide the necessary skills to develop in the sports industry, providing skills for sports management or for legal professionals who wish to maintain or enter this industry, with career opportunities in sports organizations, law firms specializing in sports law or individual professional advice to athletes.

The Executive Program in Sports Arbitration offers a practical personalized learning method backed up by the theory and research that focuses primarily on proceedings and practical aspects before Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) as well as exploring arbitration in other sports bodies.

Objective

After all modules participants will have acquired knowledge and valuable insights into how sports arbitration is conducted by counsel and arbitrators. Designed for lawyers with an interest in sports law, in-house counsel, and other professionals interested in international dispute resolution, this program includes pleading training on the basis of mock hearings and a mock case role plays of arbitration-related scenarios drafting sessions to learn how to draft written submissions and interactive discussions on cutting-edge arbitration topics. No prior experience in sports arbitration is required.

Content

The program focuses on the structure and particularities of the arbitral proceedings before the CAS and the various aspects of international litigation in the field of sports law. Likewise considering the fact that Switzerland hosts most major international sport federations and organizations (not only CAS but also the International Olympic Committee) students will be introduced to the case law of the Swiss Federal Court and to the different procedures (among others, the specific arbitration procedure for the Olympic Games and Anti-Doping disputes). The program also introduces students to the dispute resolution system within the international federations.
