Sports Management and Sports Law conferences

In April, in collaboration with the International Sports Lawyers Association (ISLA), we launched MatchPoint Talks, a platform dedicated to exploring key topics through sports management and sports law conferences.

Since then, we have hosted a series of conferences where leading experts share their insights on areas such as dispute mediation in football, data protection in sporting events, the global anti-doping system, and maternity regulations in football

The sports management and sports law conferences not only provide valuable knowledge for professionals in the field but also open the floor to debate on highly relevant issues within the sports industry.

Mediation and Dispute Resolution in Football

The first edition of MatchPoint Talks featured Víctor Rodrigo Zamora, Senior Legal Counsel at FIFA, who discussed the importance of mediation in resolving disputes in football.

Víctor highlighted how FIFA’s Football Tribunal, through the Dispute Resolution Chamber and the Players’ Status Committee, facilitates the management of conflicts between clubs and players. This mediation not only improves internal relations but also contributes to the stability of the transfer system.

This approach is crucial for maintaining a fair and equitable environment in the sport, preventing prolonged and costly litigation. We invite you to watch the highlights of this talk on our YouTube channel.

Data Protection at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games

In our second edition,  on May 23, Vanesa Alarcón, a partner in the Technology, Media, and Telecommunications (TMT) area at AMG Abogados, analyzed the “Security and Data Protection Implications at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.”

Vanesa explained how digital innovation transforms security and data protection at global sporting events, a crucial aspect of understanding the constant evolution of sports law. This topic is particularly relevant in the Olympic Games, where the secure handling of personal information is essential to protect athletes and participants.

The talk also addressed the legal challenges associated with the use of advanced technologies, highlighting the need for robust regulatory frameworks. Don’t miss the key points of this conversation in our summary.

The Global Anti-Doping System

On June 26, Dr. Diego Grippo, President of the Argentine National Anti-Doping Commission (CNAD), led a discussion on the functioning of the global anti-doping system

In his presentation, Dr. Grippo detailed the legal and operational framework of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and its impact on preserving fair competition.

The talk also addressed contemporary challenges such as doping, corruption, and discrimination in sports. Dr. Grippo emphasized the importance of international cooperation and collaboration between national anti-doping organizations and sports law managers in combating these issues and protecting the integrity of sport.

Maternity Protection in Football

On July 25, in our fourth edition of MatchPoint Talks, we were joined by Alexandra Gómez, a lawyer specializing in sports law applied to football and Senior Legal Advisor at FIFPRO.

Alexandra provided valuable insight into the new maternity regulations in football, emphasizing the importance of protecting the rights of female players during pregnancy. Through the analysis of the case of Sara Bjork against Club Piccini, Alexandra highlighted the need for clear written regulations and well-structured postpartum plans.

The talk also discussed the development of practical guidelines for clubs, aimed at ensuring that female players can make informed decisions about their careers while pregnant. Additionally, the importance of gender equality in sports was addressed, urging for greater representation and equitable opportunities for women at all levels of the industry.
